Appeal a Council Tax decision
Council Tax appeals go through your council first, then the free Valuation Tribunal. You must keep paying while the appeal is decided.
What you can appeal
- A penalty notice for not providing information
- The council saying you're liable when you shouldn't be
- A discount or exemption refused (single person, student, severely mentally impaired)
- A completion notice on a new or renovated property
You cannot appeal
Just because the bill is too expensive. To challenge your band, you contact the Valuation Office Agency (VOA), not the council.
The process
- Write to the council with your reasons
- Council has 2 months to respond
- If rejected (or no response): Valuation Tribunal within 2 months — free, independent
