Appeal a Clean Air Zone penalty
CAZ and ULEZ penalty charges are issued automatically by ANPR. Errors are common — wrong vehicle, exempt vehicle, or daily charge already paid.
Common appeal grounds
- Your vehicle is exempt (disabled tax class, historic, certain plug-in hybrids)
- The daily charge was paid but not registered
- Number plate misread — wrong vehicle penalised
- You weren't inside the zone — ANPR error
- Multiple penalties for the same day
How to appeal
- Informal challenge to the issuing authority within 28 days
- Formal representation if rejected
- Independent tribunal if still rejected

Which zones does Tykkets cover?
All UK CAZ zones (Birmingham, Bristol, Bradford, Sheffield, Newcastle, Portsmouth, Tyneside) plus London ULEZ.
Can I appeal if I just didn't know about the zone?
Not knowing isn't a legal ground, but check whether signage was clearly visible — that can be.
